Big Ole, the famous statue of a jolly Viking in Alexandria, MN, is 50 years old, and needs attention, which will cost $26,500. A family of birds is nesting in his shoulder. His cape is made of two pieces that are splitting apart, and the wind could separate them completely. The fiberglass is peeling off and turning to dust. The paint is peeling in many places. His most recent paint colors were not the best, giving him a solid cream color face and beard. The Runestone Museum owns Big Ole and must maintain him. The $26,500 is a very large price for us to pay. Can you help out a little? We will keep a graphic on this page, showing the progress we are making toward restoring Big Ole, with your donation. Please donate to the Big Ole Repair Fund. Or, you can send a check, or bring one to our gift shop.

AACF Difference-Maker Grant Awarded!

We are pleased to announce that The Runestone Museum has received a $10,000 maximum matching grant from the Alexandria Area Community Foundation. For every donation received after August 5, the AACF grant will match it, up to $10,000. Now you have a bigger incentive to help out Big Ole.

Your donation is tax-deductible!

Follow the progress on the sword below:

 Big Ole Sword- Red progress
The red color is your donated funds. The green color is the AACF funds that match your donations. When the green color reaches the top of the sword, our goal of raising $26,500 in Viking Loot will be reached, and we can pay for the repairs to Big Ole!

We have the Runestone!

Welcome to the Runestone Museum, located in downtown Alexandria, Minnesota. We invite you to stop by and tour historic Fort Alexandria, take your picture with the country’s biggest viking, and see the world famous Kensington Runestone.

For a while you will live in the past, so walk a little slower, talk a little slower, and enjoy the exhibit on Norse history, the Native American exhibit, the Minnesota wildlife display, the display of early pioneer life, and the hands-on children’s area.

Enter Fort Alexandria and visit several authentic log buildings, an 1880 country school house, and view the forty-foot viking ship, the “Snorri”. Experience the changing of the seasons in the display of tools and farm equipment used by an earlier generation. For a preview see the Exhibits page.
